Regardless of whether delighted in flawless, on the stones, mixed with water or blended as a mixed drink, the agreement of this mix stays finish. It is an ensemble of no less than 10 malt and grain whiskies, matured in five distinct kinds of barrels, from Suntory’s Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita refineries. While fans of traditional Scotch and extra-aged Japanese whisky (like Hibiki 21 Year or Yamazaki 18 Year) may find Hibiki Japanese Harmony a bit soft for their tastes, the spirit is well-crafted and tasty with a long inviting finish. It’s like you are meeting old friends. “What you are talking about is not just whiskey, you know. The result is best described by that hipster director trying to get Bill Murray to understand nuance through a demure interpreter. This is a total of ten malt and grain whiskies that are aged in 5 different types of oak, including the incredibly rare Japanese Mizunara oak – of which a single barrel can go for $6,000 or more. To be specific, Hibiki Japanese Harmony is made with malt whiskies from the Yamazaki and Hakushu distilleries, as well as grain whisky from the Chita distillery. Comes at the perfect sipping strength of 43 this whisky was bottled in a 70cl vessel. To make up for these losses, Suntory has released its Hibiki Harmony, an affordable and approachable blend using the same key malt and grain whiskies from the original Hibiki 17 and 21 year expressions. This 21 year old Japanese Whisky from Hibiki contains Japanese Whisky aged for a minimum of 21 years. Unfortunately both the 12 and 17 year Hibikis are no longer produced, discontinued as demand continues to outpace production. It may also be from the incredibly approachable 12 year expression that went for as little as $55 back when it was still available.
